Family Weekend Near Chiang Mai: Two Nights at Skugga Estate

A family weekend at Skugga Estate is two nights in the Mae On valley, 30 minutes from Chiang Mai city centre, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The plan bases the family at Skugga Estate Farm, with a two-bedroom cabin, a pool and a playground, and finishes with Sunday brunch at Skugga Estate Vineyard, 1.5 kilometres away.
Friday afternoon, the car leaves the main road and the weekend slows to the speed of a child with a task. There is a working farm with a chocolate lab, a bakery, a roastery and a garage of British classic cars. There is a playground between the buildings and a lawn beside the cabin.
The plan runs from Friday to Sunday and spends both nights on the Farm. It suits families with children under 15, and it works for three generations too, with a Vineyard villa as the alternative base.

How the family weekend works
Friday is arrival. Check in to the cabin, swim, and let the children find the playground. Families with older children can add the coffee and tea workshop on Friday afternoon. Families with younger children can spend the same hours at the pool and on the lawn.
Saturday is the making day. The chocolate workshop fills the morning, a barbecue lunch follows, and the afternoon belongs to the Classic Car Garage, the pool and the playground.
Sunday is brunch at the Vineyard. Drive the short distance, order slowly, and walk the young rows afterwards.
The order follows the estate. The Farm opens every day and its workshops run on set days. The Vineyard opens Tuesday to Sunday, and its Sunday brunch is the natural last stop of the weekend.
Where does a family stay at Skugga Estate?
The Farm is the base. The Farm cabin has two bedrooms and two bathrooms across 65 square metres, with a kitchen, a balcony and open indoor and outdoor living areas. The Farm describes it as ideal for a couple, a small family or a pair of friends. Guests have access to the pool and the pickleball court, and the playground is on site. The grass lawn beside the cabin is open for children to play.
A Farm suite is a one-bedroom unit of 32 to 36 square metres with a double or twin bed. The Farm describes the suites as ideal for a couple or small family getaway.
A larger family, or three generations travelling together, takes a Vineyard villa. Each villa has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a large lounge and dining area, and balconies over the vines. A villa can be booked as one four-bedroom house, or split into a two-bedroom villa with a lounge and two separate suites.
The Skugga Villas and Suites brand operates across both sites, so one conversation covers both.
What can children do at the Farm?
The Farm is built around things to do with the hands. A playground and a pool sit beside the cabins, and a pickleball court sits next to them.
The chocolate lab runs a workshop that children under 15 join with a parent. The garage has a slot car track and a racing simulator. The Roll Bar bakes bread and pastries every morning, including a pan au chocolat filled with 66 per cent chocolate from the lab. The Chocolate Bar serves smoothies made from the farm's cacao.
The Roastery lets visitors watch the roaster at work, and the Tea Bar needs no booking. Guests there blend their own tea from the ingredients on the counter, with staff on hand to help, and the menu includes a cacao husk tea made from the shells left over at the lab.
The Full Estate Tour is a guided walk of about an hour and a half through the cacao and coffee plantations. It covers the permaculture practices and the beehives, includes a taste of fresh fruit from the trees and a tasting flight of coffee and chocolate. The Farm takes bookings for it by phone.
How does the chocolate workshop work for children?
The chocolate workshop is the centre of the Saturday. Children under 15 join with a parent at 950 baht, and adults pay 1,100 baht. It runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, in the morning or the afternoon.
The session starts with a cacao farm tour and follows the bean through fermentation, roasting, cracking, winnowing, grinding, tempering and moulding. Guests taste eight to eleven types of chocolate, wrap their own bars, make pralines and drink cacao husk tea. The price includes a free drink and a gift set with an apron, teas and coffees.
Groups are typically capped at twelve, and sessions run in English and Thai. Reservations are required. A group made up only of young children can be arranged on request.
The lab also sells what it makes. A box of twelve assorted pralines, each made with a different Skugga chocolate, is the souvenir that survives the drive home.
Is the Classic Car Garage good for children?
Entry to the Classic Car Garage is free and the doors are open every day. It holds fifteen vehicles, predominantly British, from a 1951 MG TD to a pair of 1966 Land Rovers. The classic car collections piece places it among the other collections in Thailand.
At the back of the garage there are thirty metres of Carrera slot car track where up to five people race at the same time. Beside it sits a full simulator rig with a choice of cars and circuits.
What does a family eat at Skugga Estate?
Lunch is at The BBQ at Skugga, an open-air bistro over the estate that serves skewers, salads, sandwiches and burgers. A club sandwich on sourdough and a ribeye steak sandwich sit alongside a three-skewer plate. Participants in the workshops can add a barbecue lunch for 400 baht per person.
The Roll Bar covers the mornings and the gaps between meals. It sells bread, pastries and the passionfruit tarte, and visitors can watch the bakers work.
Dinner and brunch are at the Vineyard, which takes reservations with a credit card and a 24-hour cancellation policy. Book ahead, and book brunch with the rest of the weekend.
Sunday: brunch among the vines
Sunday brunch at the Vineyard runs with twenty selections at 1,200 baht per person. Children under 12 pay half price. A drinks package of wines and cocktails adds 795 baht per person for the adults.
Order slowly. Afterwards, walk the young rows with the children. The vines were planted in 2025 and no wine has been produced, so the walk is about the setting and the open grass. The slow Sunday piece describes the day in full.
When is the best time for a family weekend near Chiang Mai?
The cool and dry months, November to February, give the most comfortable weekend. Chiang Mai's Wikipedia climate data puts the average daily high at 30.8 degrees Celsius in November, 29.2 in December and 30.0 in January, with average lows of 19.9, 16.9 and 15.7. November averages 41 millimetres of rain, December 14 and January 11. November is the best of the four for clear air, because the smoke season starts in December.
The rains run from May to October, and August is the wettest month at an average of 223 millimetres. A rainy-season weekend suits this plan, because the slot cars and the simulator, the workshops and the bakery do not depend on the sky. Smoke from seasonal burning affects the north from December to April, and March is the worst month. Check the air quality forecast before you book a weekend between December and April with children.
What do the activities cost for a family?
The published prices are straightforward. The chocolate workshop costs 1,100 baht per adult and 950 baht per child under 15. The coffee and tea workshop costs the same. A barbecue lunch adds 400 baht per person for workshop participants. Sunday brunch costs 1,200 baht per person, and children under 12 pay half price. Entry to the Farm is free.
How to get to Skugga Estate with children
The estate is 30 minutes from Chiang Mai city centre. Arrange a car or a driver, or ask the team about transfers before you travel. Workshop guests can pre-book a van at 200 baht per person for the round trip, booked 24 hours ahead and subject to availability. Pickups run from Skugga Estate One Nimman and Tapae Gate.
For visitors from Singapore and Hong Kong, the weekend starts at the airport. Scoot flies non-stop from Singapore and HK Express flies non-stop from Hong Kong, and both routes run daily. A morning arrival on Friday reaches the Farm in time for the afternoon.
Add a third night
Add a third night and Monday becomes a slow morning at the Farm, since the Farm opens every day and the Vineyard closes on Mondays. A pastry from the Roll Bar, a last swim and a walk past the beehives make a better ending than a Sunday rush. For a weekend that uses both sites for a night each, the valley weekend piece sets out the plan. For the idea behind the pace, slow weekends covers it.
How to book the family weekend
Book in this order. Start with the rooms, since both sites sit inside one booking conversation with the team. Add the workshops next, which run on set days and need reservations. Reserve the barbecue lunch and Sunday brunch after that. Settle transport last.
