Chiang Mai’s Secret Vineyard Getaways

Northern Thailand has entered a new chapter in its story of slow living. Beyond its mountains and temples, a quiet vineyard movement is reshaping how travelers experience Chiang Mai. These aren’t the manicured estates of Europe, but living landscapes where light, soil, and craft meet.

From Mae Rim to San Pa Tong, small vineyards are emerging as havens for travelers seeking connection and calm—places where a weekend becomes a sensory retreat rather than a checklist.

At the center of this movement lies Skugga Vineyard, a rural sanctuary where every path leads to something grown, roasted, or poured by hand.

Skugga: A New Destination for Retreat Seekers

Tucked between forest and field, Skugga Vineyard blends natural design with artisan living. Guests can move easily from the rows of vines to the scent of roasting coffee, the quiet hum of the cacao lab, or the shaded garden where tea is hand-blended and poured.

The estate is more than a stay—it’s a rhythm. Mornings drift over the vineyard with mist and birdsong. Afternoons invite wine tasting beneath the trees or a walk through The Plantation, where coffee, tea, and cacao grow side by side.

Evenings unfold with firelight and flavor: open-air barbecue dinners, glasses of local wine, and music that fades into the sound of night insects.

Weekend Itinerary: Slow Days Between the Vines

Day One: Arrival & Grounding

Arrive by late afternoon and settle into our private Cabin Rental overlooking the vines. A welcome drink from our coffee roastery pairs perfectly with the view. As dusk falls, join a guided vineyard walk followed by a quiet dinner at the BarBQ terrace.

Day Two: Taste & Explore

Begin with sunrise tea at Our Tea pavilion, followed by a vineyard breakfast of seasonal fruit, eggs, and fresh bread from the Roll Bar Bakery. Midday brings a farm lunch at The Plantation—grilled vegetables, herbs from the garden, and olive oil infused with local spices. End the afternoon with a private wine tasting and sunset barbecue overlooking the hills.

Day Three: Unwind & Depart

A leisurely morning stroll through the farm trails leads to brunch under the trees. Before leaving, stop by the chocolate lab for a tour and a bar or two of Skugga’s own ceremonial cacao.

Hidden Experiences Only Locals Know

Sunset BBQ Among the Vines

As twilight settles, the vineyard glows in gold. Guests gather for a wood-fire barbecue where the menu changes with the season and the air carries hints of lemongrass and smoke.

Tea Tasting in the Orchard

The tea pavilion sits at the edge of the plantation, shaded by fruit trees and cool wind. Tea is brewed the old way—slowly, in clay pots—and served with small bites made from farm herbs.

Chocolate and Cacao Workshop

Inside the chocolate lab, the scent of roasted beans fills the air. Guests can sample hand-tempered chocolate or join a short workshop that traces cacao from pod to bar.

Each experience is designed around rhythm, not rush. There is no itinerary louder than the sound of the breeze through the vines.

Beyond the Vineyard: Nearby Attractions

  • Mae Rim Loop: A scenic drive connecting coffee farms, orchid gardens, and mountain viewpoints.

  • Huay Tung Tao Reservoir: A quiet lakeside escape for cycling, swimming, or picnicking.

  • Mon Jam: High-altitude vegetable farms and panoramic sunset views.

  • Wat Pa Dara Phirom: A serene Lanna monastery only a short drive from the vineyard.

  • Local Artisans’ Trail: Pottery studios and weaving villages between Mae Rim and Hang Dong for those who love slow craft.

Why Vineyard Stays Are Chiang Mai’s Next Big Secret

The vineyards of Northern Thailand are still small, still learning the language of their soil—but that’s what makes them extraordinary. They carry the beauty of beginnings.

Each glass of local wine, each handmade bar of chocolate, and each morning spent among the vines reflects something larger—a cultural moment where Thailand’s creative energy meets its agricultural heart.

At Skugga, this meeting becomes tangible. It's a place where you can taste the land, breathe its rhythm, and quietly remember what it means to slow down.
